With each passing decade, the intersection of Powell, Eddy and Market became more of a traffic bottleneck. (Note the car in the top picture trying to squeeze past the end of the cable car.)
In the 1970s, the entire block of Powell street was closed to traffic. The asphalt was replaced with brickwork.
