The Ferry Building was sentenced to 35 years of exile when the Embarcadero Freeway was constructed.  This
double-decker monstrosity effectively erased the entire building, leaving only the clock tower showing. (Not surprisingly, there weren't many picture postcards from that era!)

It took nothing less than the 1989 Loma Prieta eartquake to get all that ugly concrete out of the way.  Within three years, the last of the rubble was removed.
