For over a century,the St Francis Hotel has stood across Powell Street from Union Square.  When it was first built (before the 1906 earthquake), the St Francis took up less than half the block, but soon expanded to fill all available space. In the 1970s, a towering 32-story annex was added behind the main building, complete with exterior glass elevators.
