| MARQUARD'S LITTLE CIGAR STORE Below is a picture of Marquard's, as it looked before it closed in 2004. A Tenderloin landmark for decades, it was always a reliable place to pick up a quick pint of whisky and a racing form. Skyrocketing rents forced it out, and today a hat shop occupies the space. Fortunately, the hat shop has (so far, at least) left the famous sign intact (including the WELCOME ANYBODY above the entrance). If you feel like creating a little trouble, go into the hat shop and take a snapshot. They hate that! Click here to read an excellent story about Marquard's that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2004. |
