	THE GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION The 1939 Exposition was held on Treasure Island, which was created from soil dredged from the bottom of the bay.  Following the end of the Exposition in 1940, Treasure Island became a Navy facility.  The base was closed in 1997.
