A small herd of buffalo (well... bison, technically...) has been kept in Golden Gate Park since 1891, when the species was in danger of extinction. 

Bison made a comeback in the late twentieth century, and are no longer endangered.  Even so, these guys need never worry about ending up in the buffalo stew at
Tommy's Joynt.
