| The Conservatory of Flowers has been in Golden Gate Park since 1879, but that wasn't the original plan. James Lick, a local mucky-muck, originally intended the huge structure to be on his estate in Santa Clara. The entire building, pre-fabricated and shipped in bulky crates, arrived at his home. but before the pieces could be assembled, he up and died. Lick's family had no use for a gigantic do-it-yourself project, so they sold the unassembled structure to to some San Franciscans, who in turn donated it to The City. The photos below show the Conservatory in 1915 and today. |
