| Opening in 1863, the original Cliff House wasn't very impressive. Nonetheless, it attracted prominent citizens from all over, including the occasional US president. Eventually the property was purchased by millionare Adolph Sutro, who built his mansion on the hill above. The first Cliff House was destroyed by fire in 1894. |
