My enlistment was finally up.  On my next birthday, a friend and I took the Fiero on a spontaneous late-night roadtrip to Reno.

In a doomed effort to keep up the staggering payments on the Fiero, I took a part-time job at a local movie theater.  Within two years, I was made manager my own theater.  This says less about me than about the overall talent of the long-term employees.   I ended up staying with the job for about seven years.

I entered the graphics arts program at Chico State, on Uncle Sam's dime.  At a certain point in the program, a student is requred to have his work evaluated by a panel, in order to continue.  Fortunately, I passed. In the long run, however, full-time school and full-time worked proved to be too much, so I never completed my courses.

Soon I met Carla.  She was cute, smart, funny and sarcastic; in other words, the perfect woman for me.  Amongst a lot of other common interests, we shared a love for San Francisco.  Here we are at Pier 39.

“Classic hits 96.7 is KNVR, for Chico, East Biggs and the entire North Valley.”  I had the overnight shift on Friday and Saturday, and I doubt anyone other than Carla ever heard my show.

Shortly after we married, Carla and I decided to make a quick trip to Fort Bragg, California.  Four hours to get there, four hours at the beach, four hours back.  It was the only thing our schedules allowed.  Here Carla is trying to introduce our dog Casey to the Pacific.  Casey is not impressed.

Here I am repairing some projection equipment at work.  The corporation that owned the theater made it clear that they were no longer interested in the “cow towns” like Chico, and they would pull out the moment that any competition moved into town.  Which is exactly what they did.
